Clutch

#1 PostAuthor: Wayne1960 » Sat Sep 13, 2014 8:19 pm

Guys finally got bike running and sounding good. Thanks the Dave (buzzard for the work he did on my head and the rebore.

Clutch question. Bike sound better when I pull the clutch in! When I let it out its sounds noisier. So do I adjust or is it something else?
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

Could be a couple of things, Idle speed a bit low or carb balance may need fine tuning and the worst thing it could be is the needle roller clutch bearing worn as that is an engine strip to replace.

Ok great well I've been fine tuning carbs and adjusting the needles set at 1.5 turns out and checking idle speed while adjusting and that did make a difference.
What other adjustments should I make?
If I let it tick over for say 5mins the turn throttle quickly it cuts out!
Starts again ok and responds ok but get a slight popping so could be getting air leak somewhere I guess.

If the clutch is rattling, and goes away when you pull clutch in as said by two zeds it can sometimes be made less by carefully balancings carbs, that said the tickover should not be more than 1200 rpm,if rattle persists usually broken springs in the back of the clutch.Popping can be air leaks check exhaust headers etc..

THEY ALL DO THAT SIR - Don't worry, it's common on lots of a/c 70's Jap bikes :!:

Basket springs maybe shot - take clutch cover off & plates out and see how much slack they have - may even have a broken spring or two.... not end of the world, but a full engine strip to remove clutch basket on kickstart engine.
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

if i put my hand over the end of the exhaust they all feel abput the same. 1,2 & 3 pipes have yelloewed bit 4 no change.

thing is i cant ride it yet cos i never took my test !!!!!!!

Stalling on initial throttle opening is a fairly common problem with Zeds - the old carbs seemed a bit lean when briskly opened, just inferior design back in the day although they don't all do it.

Try and wind the sir screw in a bit to richen it up a tad - or just coax it gently when pulling away :!:

get a colour tune if you don't want to ruin your new exhausts

it allows you to see what's happening inside the combustion chamber. it is basically a spark plug with a glass top & good basic tool for setting the fuel mixture
