the only thing i can think of is coils from eletronic ignition used on points ignition or the coils are + earth instead of - earth . both will make the coils hot .

I suppose if everything has been changed to accommodate the new set up then everything shud be ok, iv found in the past mixing electrical old with new can cause some probs, even down to the old loom, iv done loads of old zeds up and the amount of melted electrics due to just adding half whats needed cause so much shit, i just love these old zeds, what therapeutic joy they bring,
Good luck anyways,

The smoke coming from under tank, will probably be the coils melting and ozing some goo. This is usually the symtom of over-voltage to the coils.
After you fitted the combined reg/rec, did you check to see if the regulator part is working? Otherwise, you have may have wired the unit incorrectly.

This checking is done by simply checking the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running at about 3-4000 rpm. Should not be more than 14.5Volts. .... RegardZ.

I know this might sound silly but is it possible that maybe some oil residue got on the motor or header pipes, ie from rocker cover or leaky tacho cable seal, it 'd smoke like hell as it was being burned off, just a suggestion.

well guys, i dont have a volage checker, mainly because i dont know anything about electrics. i know this sounds negative, buts its true, think i need to learn a bit.

i did think the smoke could have been a bit of residue oil/grease, but the leads were hot and very limp, is that normal?

Heat from the motor will make leads HOT & limp......

If its still running OK sit and watch it (with an extinguisher handy) & see if it is just excess oil residue from the rebuild!

I have never heard of HT leads burning due to electric fault :??

i am going to take the bike out in a bit to see ifit gets just as hot with the old set up. i am now wondering if it was residue oil/grease from storage.

I'd put it down to oil / header pipes. Pull the tank off and if you see signs of melting in the loom then worry but I doubt you will.

well, i have to say, with the combined re/reg unit on the way id connected it ......IE block connection to block connector, black earth behind kick start, one white wire with double female, receiving wire with fuse from battery and one wire that i thought was coming from the generator..... there was an unhealthy looking amount of smoke coming from under the tank and the ht leads were hot soft and limp as f;ck.

confidence lost :ooops
