I cleaned mine with petrol and then purposely didnt spray on any dust attractor with the specific intention of doing it regularly and not cutting down on air flow through the filter.
Drifting away from the CV's for a bit now so will see how the K&N behaves with slide carbs. May use a different regime for those.

I done mine A.P.E same type of filters with hot very soapy water ,washing machine powder and fairy liquid ,leave to soak ,scrub with nail brush ,then rinse and leave to dry. and i also do not use any oils on them ,but a light spray of WD 40 does the job .

Hmm thought the idea behind the oil was to add an extra dimension to filtering by trapping the tiny bits that the filter medium missed, or am I missing a point ?

Not missing anything Keith, after a year of running it 'wet' when new it didnt collect any dirt but loads of leaves, flies, bits of foam from the seat, lint, seeds and a fibre washer.
Oil wont help these in future but does have the effect of holding them against the surface of the filter and clogging it.
Mine is a K&N direct replacement filter used inside the standard airbox.
Like the WD40 idea though.

Be careful Paul - as K&N's use cotton filtration that can be prone to damage and shrinkage if treated badly.... You can buy K&N filter wash/charging kits :!:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

I thought you meant single wire mesh type filters ? i would contact K&N and 1st see if it is a washable type ? if not get a new one ?
My mate years ago at Long marsden ran his Z1B with a K&N air box filter and only got high 12`s he took it out and ran 12.02 ,so it is quite important to get it right ?
