Rotor

#1 PostAuthor: Wayne1960 » Sat Sep 14, 2013 8:30 am

Guys do I have to use a special tool to remove the rotor and starter clutch assembly? I have managed to lock the rotor and removed the first bolt.
Just purchased a 1976 UK Z900 A4 for renovation. Wish me luck.

Use the top steering stem bolt to undo the rotor - I think the rear axle fits too :| Just wind it in quite tight & keep tapping it smartly with a hammer - it'll pop off
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Are you removing the rotor to enable work to be done on the starter clutch or are you having the crank reconditioned?

The front wheel spindle, I use a chain and rachet to hold the rotor, that you can buy for under a tenner to remove oil filters from cars then hold the rotor with one hand just keep tightening with the front wheel spindle and it will pop of no need to tap

Ive tried all three methods but had the most success with the steering stem top nut and as paul says the chain filter wrench just get as long as possible bar on your socket ..forget wackin it wiv an hammer and if the engine is still connected to the back wheel shove it in gear and lock the brake on

Swing arm spindle fits in to the threads tighten the bolt until it hits the crank the a sharp hit with a hammer on the bolt should then loosen it ,

if you are going to use a claw type three leg puller you are more than likely to damage the rotor or the starter clutch. using the original thread in the rotor is the only way to remove it. just keep tightening / shock the bolt until it wont tighten any more then give the bolt a good smack with a copper hammer

guys thanks for all your help with this. I didn't remove the rotor in the end but have just purchased a new bolt which came with the woodruff key i think. Little half moon piece of steel.
Do i need this if the rotor was not removed and if so where does it go?

if you didn't remove the rotor you don't need the woodruff key.
