Decided to get on with the front end whilst i wait for a back sprocket to turn up.
Fitted new taper rollers, painted the top yoke and slotted the forks in.
Quickly came to the conclusion that the gold anodised forks look shite so had to do something about it.

Image

Had bought some Sodium hydroxide crystals from Gateros plating to strip the anno from the R1 calipers gold stars so decided to do the same to the forks.
Only fly in the ointment was that i had rebuilt them with new seals etc after i had extended them.
Not wanting to pull them apart and risk damaging the seals just yet i decided i had nowt to lose by having a go at stripping them whilst they are in one piece.

As they say on the telly .. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

After a bit of experimentation with the concentration of the solution and suitably equipped with goggles and rubber gloves i carefully set about sponging the sodium on the the leg.

After only ten minutes and a wipe with clean water i had this

Very suprised how clean and easy it came off and with no smutting .

Image

Only 90 mins work from start to finish and i had this.
Spot the difference :D

Image

Quickly perfected the technique and after another 20 mins job done.
Image

Don't mind the gold on the damping adjusters so i'll leave it on.

That was the only right thing to do with the forks!!!!! Looking like a million dollar after taking off that gold
I have followed this tread and most say that it is really amazing to see how you solve different tasks along the way... And all of them turns out perfect :D
Really admire what you doing and is inspired with a lot of your solution .. Keep up the good work :more :more

Same treatment for the calipers.
Pretty sure the grey finish on the calipers is anno too so not wanting to risk taking any of that off i knocked up a five sided tool to unscrew the gold stars
Nothing too fancy just attacked a bit of scrap ally with the angle grinder till it fitted something like

Image

They came out much easier than expected and are only sealed with an 'o' ring and no thread lock.

One done and three more to go.

Zed that does indeed look loads better with the Ano removed :D
Great tip for the Ano removal too, beats the hell out of sanding through it like i did with my GSXR frame back in the dark ages :|

look loads better with the gold stripped. Also called caustic soda, neutralise with vinegar solution.

Looks way better with the silver fork legs, as long as you don't polish the hell out of them! :)
There's no replacement for displacement.

Very close to getting back on it's wheels.
Got a new set of tyres waiting to go on and received this dural blank rear sprocket from Dennis Trollop Racing this morning.

Image

After some very carefull setting up in the lathes four jaw it was bored out to fit the zx10 sprocket carrier and just needs some stainless studs making to bolt it up.
Image

Only thing slowing the progress to this milestone is the offending gold discs.
Really want black centers but not keen on painting them as they soon get tatty around the buttons and i don't think leaving them gold is an option, should i paint them black or just strip the anno back to bare ally for now ???

I assume the discs are stainless steel, if so..

Have you looked into Melonite QPQ coating ?

It is a Quench - Polish - Quench process or I think its full name is

Nitrocarburizing, polishing, and post-oxidizing.

We use this operation on stainless steel fasteners, it gives good corrosion resistance ( & prevents "Galling" on stainless steel threads) and it finish colour is almost a matt black finish.

The only thing I am unsure of is if they can mask of the pad wear area or if / how it would effect the disc .
eg warpage??

The gold carriers are aluminium.
I can just strip them to bare ally and leave as is or paint black.
The more i think about it the bare ally is winning for now and i can change to proper anodised black centered discs at a later date.

Personally i'd strip them to bare alloy. Leave them silver & see what you think?

Now that gold is out of fashion i hope you realise the extra work you've given me!!
