a raging thirst for oil?

#1 PostAuthor: jon the gripper » Mon Jul 02, 2007 3:05 pm

my 1075 j2 has only done 3000 miles since rebuild,it has an oil cooler, gas flowed head, goes like crazy, and only smokes at over 100 miles an hour,a round trip of 200 miles it took a litre of oil, also there are no leaks? also should the camchain rattle, the chap i bought it from reckons this is normal and to tighten any more could do the engine in?

These are older air cooled engines, and compared with newer water cooled bikes, do sound a bit mechanical :|
The cam chain shouldn't really rattle tho :!:
You running a standard tensioner (hope NOT) or a billet thing, like APE or ORIENT EXPRESS? Check it asap
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Must be something wrong to be using that amount of oil.
Maybe when it was bored out to 1075,a little too much was taken out??
Do a compression check and see what you get.
The cam chain shouldn't rattle either so this needs looking at,if it needs replacing it's an engine out and split job.

Jon, at that rate of oil loss, it must be visible somewhere?
Does she smoke on the overrun after a blast :?:
So she don't smoke on start up, ................ or when warm when blipping throttle :?:
No oil puddles after a run :?:
It would be a good idea to get someone to follow you on a run to check for visual smoke from exhaust :?

If it's doing 200 miles per litre I dont think i'll be offering to follow could be a little slippy.

Does it smoke when you shut off / accelerate? Has someone run it in too slowly and glazed the bores? Have you filled it and forgotten about pumping it round the cooler?

what type of oil are you using? modern fully synthetic seems to "escape" too easily in older engines.......
