z1000a1 cam end plugs

hello chaps help ive just fired up the motor after a rebuild, i fitted some new rubber cam end plugs[vesrah from z1 ent] fitted with a little gasget cement, i let the motor run for around 7 or 8 minutes, then noticed one plugs [no4 exhaust] had sucked in and was leaking oil , i took off the cover and fitted an old plug, started the motor and once again one of the new plugs started to suck inwards [no 1 exhaust] again replaced with old plug, started the motor now no 4 inlet is doing the same has any one else had this problem have i done some thing to cause this problem or could it just be very poor plugs thanks alan

Hard to tell from your pics but you are fitting the plugs with the concave side to inside and the lip to the outside,i use RTv silcon and let it nearly cure b4 fitting cam cover,degrease hollows with carbs cleaner b4 fitting.

hi paul yes the plugs are in the right way, i did wipe clean but didn't degrease the hollows with carb cleaner, i thought the sealer was intended to prevent oil leakage not stick the plugs in position, i assumed the plugs would be held in under pressure, i think i may need to refix with a silicon sealant, is rtv a special sealant can i pick this up from any bike shop cheers alan

RTV is room temperature vulcanising. Plain old silicone gasket to you and me.

I put mine in with a smear and let them go off before fitting the cam cover. When the sealant is in place you should see the plugs sitting just proud of the cover surface. The cover then will compress the plugs ever so slightly when fitted.

If it's any help - I replaced mine with anodised ali ones from Ape via Debben's. They have a lip on both edges and slip over the width of the D (on its side) shaped hole. Sealed with a smear of Hylomar.

They wont suck in or blow out.

hi howie i did buy some ali one's via e bay a little while ago they looked the part but didn't fit so sent them back, that put me off so i thought i would stick to the rubber type, even that may not be straight forward for a novice

true mine didn't fit straight off either - I took a smooth flat file to the end of the head to reduce the thickness of the D Holes.

Didn't take too long and a bit of careful preparation with oily rags to catch the filings etc.

Same here with the alloy plugs, bit of fettling but once done are no trouble

The rubber ones are prone to moving and need to be thoroughly set (with goo) before running the motor

thanks mark, i've just re fixed the plugs with some silicon sealant, i'll test the motor tomorrow and see how it goes
