Any ideas?

#1 PostAuthor: coldsummer » Fri Mar 12, 2010 10:33 pm

Would appreciate some advice on this guys. I started reassembling the rear wheel and realised that I didn't have the correct spacers. Not sure why as I kept everything that came out but anyway I bought some more off ebay. Now there is too much float on the spacer between the rear sprocket holder and hub. This is how the hub came back from rebuilding with original bearing reinstalled...

And this is the sprocket carrier with the replacement spacer sat on top.

When I fit the sprocket carrier the spacer has about 10mm float which is about the same distance as the depth the bearing is sat back into the main hub in the first pic. Therefore, I am wondering a) is the spacer the correct one? b) is the bearing sat too deep in the hub (inner hub bearing spacer is fitted and is the same one that came out? C) should I just wang a spacer in to take up the slack?, d) does it really matter?

Anyone got any suggestions? Would be very much appreciated as I'm ripping my hair out and I don't have much to start with!

PS Bearing in carrier appears to be seated as far in as possible (against inner lip) and new oil seal sits flush with outer face of carrier.

Hi is this an early Z1? if it is there is a an extra spacer i believe that is sometimes missing,if you have the old back sprocket that came off have a look and see if its shiny on one side this will give you a clue that the spacer is missing and making the sprockets slightly out of line!

Hi Paul it is a Z1b. The parts diag shows a spacer which bolts on between the sprocket and sprocket holder but mine didn't have this. Don't think it would affect the play along the spindle though?

Coldsummer, I had a similar problem. The trouble was with item 11 on Chrisu's diagram. I had a similar part, however, it was off another bike (Z650 I think). Check the dimensions of this part it should be 42.00 mm overall. 14.9 mm long where it fits into the bearing. Yours does look a little short in you picture!
Good luck!

Thanks Garn, that would make a lot of sense, I'll check it.
