Engine verification

#1 PostAuthor: Big Fluff » Mon Apr 16, 2007 8:25 am

This was built by S&S Performance in 1978. According to a test report I've seen (Motor Cycling Sept1978) they were all fitted with turbocharged 1015cc engines. I thought that all 1015cc engines had 8mm exhaust studs?
The engine number is SS10TRB so that's stuffed that idea :D
I need to order a few engine bits anyway but it'd be handy to know what I'm starting with here.

What are the other ways to distinguish the 900 and 1000 engines apart from the chain oiler on the early Z1/A models.
Thanks.

If you look at the front of the barrels there should be a stamp showing either 903 or 1015.

Wonder why they bothered to restamp the engine number!!!

Maybe Wayne would know? Over to you LEADER....

Ahh.. S&S requested the engines were delivered unstamped from Kawasaki, just as the frames were from Rickman.
Although it says 1015 I know it was blown up in 1979 and fitted with 1105 low compression pistons by Russ Collins.
Mind you, am I right in thinking that the crankcase mouths would've had to be opened up to accept the bigger liners? It might be that it's just the head that's 900.
The engine has to be stripped anyway to have the horrible aluminium buttons removed and replaced with circlips. A hone will also be done along with wired liners and deck height set to give a comp ratio of 7:1. The valve seals will also have to be replaced as this thing hasn't run since 1980 (apart from last week).
I know all the 903cc engines had a 'pork chop' crank but what else jumps out to distinguish the two different motors.

Thanks agsin...... BF.

Inside the alternator cover should provide a clue or two as to what it is. The cranks are also different but you won't know much about that with the engine in one piece. I'd be very surprised if the crankcase exteriors aren't different in some way too but I'm sure that there are people who'll weigh in on that one.

I believe the 1015 blocks fitted most of the 903s but it varied engine to engine some of them needed somemetal removing.

Paul - Do you mean Colin M has a S&S Silver Saxon.? There were only 10 made, each having "LTD TURBO 00#" on the side panel.
I'd be very interested to get in touch with him if this were the case.
As for value, when it's finished... err quite a bit amte :D
