throttle push/pull

as the throttle is a push pull cable operation does it mean that the throttle has to be manually pushed closed or should it return by itself? mine sticks open, where is the best starting point to remedy this?

It should close on it's own - try putting grease and oil mix on your handle bars under the throttle and put some oil down the inside the cables.
That should help or try some new cables if yours are very old and nackered.

Forgot to say have a look to see if the carb linkage moves freely and lube if needed.

They need both cables to close properly although the spring will/should close the slides easily when the engine isn't running, but when it is running if there where no closing cable fitted the vacuum of the engine will cause the slides to hang up for a second or two.

Mine ran with one cable for years. never noticed a problem.

excellent - I wondered about this.

The carbs have a pretty strong spring and snap shut bet with engine running, when throttle released, the engine would run much faster requiring the final bit of twist to drop the speed to idle.

that exaplains why.

make sure that you handle bar ends are not touching the rubber on the twist grip,
