Z1R Differences.

#1 PostAuthor: PhilZ1R » Sat Mar 17, 2007 4:05 pm

Hi guys I'm hoping you can help me with some questions on my Z1R, I have just bought a German import Z1R MK2, its on an S plate 1978.

Whats the difference between MK1 and MK2? and why is my '78 model a MK2 or is that wrong :? , maybe its just the wrong badges.

I've bought to add to my little collection, I always liked them so now I'm a happy chappy :P ..

Its done 55k km, anything I should look for, should i be doing a full engine rebuild of just top end?

Thanks for you help in advance. Phil

Rather than try to explain the differences, it may be easier to look on Z Powers web site, [look under links section]. The model recognition section is what you need, can't remember if they list engine/frame numbers or not, but it is always worth giving them a call if you are un sure.
It may be that someone has fitted the incorrect badges.
There is also a good DVD which is available [also from Z Power], which has a section on the Z1R.

Further to the above, look under "model history Z1-Z1000".

Phil, any requirement to rebuild motor would depend on whether there are any nasty noises/evidence of burning oil. Bottom ends are bullet proof, top ends do wear, any history on bike? Any evidence that motor has been recently stripped (new gaskets/rtv around joints).
I would certainly check valve clearances and clean out carbs/balance them, check timing, but if no evidence of trouble as stated above, just leave it and enjoy riding. :P
