Same symptoms as mine. See my faulty dyna thread. Just happened one day with no warning. Bugger to start, Rough running up to 2500rpm then clears above that, spitting back at low revs. It's probably the Dyna packing up and missing sparks, thats if you are running a Dyna of course.

Hello Paul, You have checked cam timing and valve clearance?, I doubt its anything to do with the carburation, I would check auto advance unit, wires from the pick ups to the coils and try replacing plugs, Regards, Steve

Right, On the earlier Zeds the advance unit is fully opened by 3k starts opening about 1.5k,( not sure with the elr anybody else know). If you connect a strobe light and check the timing marks with that. If the marks are erratic when the problem appears then it's definatly the timing that is stuck on full advance. if the strobe shows the marks are fine them it's recheck carb time.

it was the carbs
I fitted the set from that animal of an ELR I bought recently and it starts and runs perfectly
idles okay too

Check float heights now there off, pilots, and while you are at it check balance the old way. Was there any shite in the bowls ?
Good news you isolated it, It is nice to be able to take another set off the shelf so to speak and swap them over.
