If your 100% sure that the carb is clean and ok, then the problem has got to be in the ignition system. When you say running rough does it backfire/ pop?

Right, On the earlier Zeds the advance unit is fully opened by 3k starts opening about 1.5k,( not sure with the elr anybody else know). If you connect a strobe light and check the timing marks with that. If the marks are erratic when the problem appears then it's definatly the timing that is stuck on full advance. if the strobe shows the marks are fine them it's recheck carb time.

Check float heights now there off, pilots, and while you are at it check balance the old way. Was there any shite in the bowls ?
