Swinging arm bush replacement

I want to replace the swinging arm bushes on my KZ1000 A2 - is this one of those jobs you wish you never started and are there any tips for a first timer please?

Do I fit just new bushes or the shaft as well and are these available from Z Power?

Bit of a lottery this one.
#1 do they really need doing (any wear/slack)
#2 remove swingarm & if the old bushes won't budge.... PANIC

I changed the swing arm on mine for a GPZ900 ally one, had the new bushes (yes, they lied to me when they said it was a direct fit!) made in phosphor bronze. Cost a bit but nice job. Worth considering?

Ah - some light!

Are you saying that the Z1 swinging arm bearings are bushes and b*ggers to remove while the Z1000 (mine's a 1978 A2) are needle rollers and a piece of cake to replace? Or am I getting confused now?

Haven't got a Z1, but I do have a Z1000A1 and that definitely has needle rollers. I can't remember the sizes of the top of my head, but if you measure the little buggers you can get new 'uns from a bearing supplier such as simplybearing.co.uk

They are caged and you won't be able to get 'em out in one piece. I can scan /copy the relevant part of the workshop manual if you like. They do need to be drifted out.
