Delboy im a metal polisher by trade worked for various plating firms
thing with older jap stuff like exhausts and mudguards( irespective of which of the jap manufactuers it is) they were made of for want of a better discription
metal not much thicker than tin foil and in a lot of cases its better and cheaper if you can to by new.

I'm a big fan of a company called Marque Restore - coventry area. They're resto specialists so will do the best possible job for you - though they're not cheap cus chroming is so labour intensive. I had a front fender and stays done for a 74 GT Suzy - ?85 inc VAT - but I had to re-chrome cus you can't get the early ones NOS. As you know, Kwackers are well served for repro chromeware so I'd say buy new.
Another problem with fenders is, no matter how good the outer surface is, the underside is usually shot to hell and looks 'orrible after plating. So you end up spraying it silver - which quickly turns to dull grey - and spoils the whole effect.
Then again, this only applies if you're the kind of guy who cares about his undersides...
