Thanx to Al (Zorded) - I have finally managed to degree me cams in :o

Al loaned me his 'top guide deflection tool' so I could check the inlet cam. As it happens, when this was fitted, it only altered the timing by a few degs.

Anyhow, the engines all back together & running.... but the f**ker still tends to hang up on the revs  :??

The carbs are a bit out so will haved to spend yet more time fiddling :!:

I checked the inlet rubbers (sprayed duck oil on them whilst running) and don't seem to be leaking.

Double checked the timing - was a bit retarded (33 degs BTDC) so set to 38degs.

Last resort will be to try another (standard) head & cams...... :??

Gotta concerntrate on the Trumpet first coz its due for MOT 6 June

OK.... been having a bit of a fiddle again... :??

The cams are degreed in OK (both about 108/109).......

I have checked the Dyna S & bob weight springs (nice & tight) and ran the bike up....

Still HANGING UP on the revs...... Tried the RS38's & some std 34mm CV's...

Image

The engine is NOT fully warmed up & the carbs are standard jetting (I think) - but it still started up fairly well..... even without the air box, which is surprising for gripey CV carbs :|

Rubbers don't leak... throttle cable loose & returns OK.....

My thought now is:
The cams (still unknown make) are a bit lumpy & they may be over lapping too much (or sumink) as the carbs do seem to be spitting fuel back. This means that even though the idle seems low - its the cams struggling to keep the idle, so when you blip the throttle, the revs pick up, the motors running nicely and gas is flowing at a more optimum mix... so the revs catch & hold high :?:   :?? :??

Pigford I have just been reading this whole thing - I understand you don't know what the cams that are in it are is that right so you have really no idea what they should be timed at. I think a set of standard cams or at least a set of cams that you have a figure for is a lot better of an idea than a trip to the tip.

Barrels off a Uni-track, head I think is the original ELR, but gas flowed.

Main thing is compression ratio is Ok ( 10.24 : 1 ) and compression good.
