Dek, as other have mentioned, if you didn't have the clutch-cover off [RHS], then the ball could not fall out, it only goes in/out on that side. Just remember a 3/8" ball can't go into a 1/4"hole. If you had the sprocket-cover off [LHS],which you obviously had, then you may have put the clutch spiral (4 start thread) back in the wrong position.
If you have both covers off you should be able to pass the push-rod right through after removing the mushroom and ball.
These clutch plates do seize together sometimes and need pulling apart, by dismantling [from the clutch cover side]. I have un-seized them by adding a small amount of "oil changing/ cleaning additive".
Regarding length of cluch cable~ Unless they are extrordinally high bars , there should be a new clutch cable available, if needed.

Hi,
I had this too and it was all the clutch plates stuck together.
I had the Main Stand removed to fit an exhaust and it seemed to not like having the oil drained away from it by being on the Side Stand. It would sometimes only take standing over night to cause the bother!!
It is a quick job to whip off the clutch cover then release the clutch holder bolts. Pull out the mess of gooey plates then tap them on a work bench to loosen them off.
I used to oil the cover gasket too to make the cover easier to remove.
hope this helps.
Regards
Howie
