Sounds like you're 180 degrees out on the timing.
redo it and make absolutely sure that piston No1 is at TDC on it's compression stroke, (finger over the hole to chek as you turn the crankshaft)
If you're lucky you won't have damaged any valves but if it starts check your compression anyway to be sure.

Well, ordinarily, 'especially with being a mechanic and seeing various things in the past' that'd be my first conclusion, (what is it about mechanically minded people, why do we all seem to be pessimists?)
However having read and contributed to the recent 'zero compression Z1000 thread' referenced by Steve R above you might, 'fingers crossed for you' get away with it.
As I said, redo the timing, chances are it's 180 degrees out, very common and easy to do and see what happens, a compression test will tell you immediately if you're low on one or more cylinders, if so, head off inspect and renew valves unfortunately.

if you didn't retime it I'd say not. Sorry to be the bearer of possible bad news but it sounds like it has slipped like bigmac103's did.
Check the valve clearances - if any are very big then you've bent some valves and the head will have to come off.
the advice about turning over by hand at least twice is good.

ive had another twiddle today and its not looking good. i checked that pistons 1 & 4 were at the top with the plugs out and the camshafts were lined up with the arrow marks facing front for ex cam and rear for inlet cam and the TDC for 1 & 4 was lined up at the bottom but still no compression and it turns over twice as quick.
does anyone have a photo of what position the cam lobes should be in when timed up correct ?
i cant see how the valves could be bent just from using the kickstart when it locked up.
