A few mods to the Silver Saxon

#1 PostAuthor: Big Fluff » Fri Jun 19, 2009 5:46 pm

After being ridiculed at the Yorkshire rally   I've decided to do something about the smoking Saxon Turbo.
Turbo bikes do 'puff' a bit, especially under high boost (I'm running at 11psi) as quite a bit of unburnt fuel gets spat out.
However, when hot and at standstill, the turbo emits quite a bit of white smoke from the zorst.

The mods do NOT involve sticking a 'Nicorette' patch on it :?? but good old Dave Dunlop (Fastbyme) has kindly offered to do a rebuild on the F40 Rajay, while I wait.! So I'm off down to his place first thing tomorrow morning where he will be fitting a new ceramic seal, bearing and gaskets. :hoo

Additionally, I've at long last managed to get hold of a full deep sump (cheers KwackerZ1). There were 4 broken fins on it, but the Bentley Mulliner dep't have sorted that out now, and I've given it a fresh coat of Sperex Super Tough satin black.
The sump measures an extra 50mm in depth, so I've also had a spare oil pump (cheers Piggy) modified also at Bentley by adding a 35mm extension on.

With a new seal installed and the pump torqued up, the strainer can be refitted and the tabs folded over.

Next job is to also change the routing of the turbo oil drain. I will be tapping into the MTC clutch cover about halfway down, this will give a 3" decline to stop oil backing up to the turbo. At present the drain is actually on a slight incline which just may add to the occasional smoking problem.

I'll keep ya'll updated with pics as things progress.
Will.

Yes I know that's the ideal place for it, done it many times before... but I don't want to have to split the crankcases just for an oil return hose

Any decent performance bike HAS to smoke a bit... (OK... preferably a bit of black - not white smoke)...... :?? You gotta has some emmissions when burning fuel at that rate  Coooool :!:

Turbo:- Just got back from Leicestershire (240 mile round trip) after a turbo rebuild courtesy of Dave Dunlop.
Turns out that the turbine impeller is actually a very rare 'A' flow item and not a 'B' flow as I first thought. :?:
The 'A' flow impeller is a bit bigger than the already aggressive 'F' flow jobby... taking a tad more to wind up but resulting in a much bigger punch
Well, the carbon seal was cracked, this was probably the culprit for the white smoke. As for the black smoke, the carb was a bit sooty because I jetted for what we thought was an 'F' flow turbine, but the 'A' flow doesn't need that big a main jet, so this was probably the result of over jetting. I will now replace the 2.8mm main jet with a 2.4mm jet and see how we go from there. Other than that, the turbo was in really good shape, and I can't praise the services of Dave highly enough... a top bloke indeed

Deep sump:- Well as far as I can see, no way has this sump ever been fitted before.! With the extended oil pump fitted there's more chance of knitting fog than getting the sump to clear the oil pump. In fact, even after fitting the old standard pump back on, the sump still won't clear :??
Fortunately, the sump is as thick as a dockers butty and with a bit of 'thinning' here and there it should fit OK.

Run out of time now to do anything more to the bike this weekend as I've just finished gutting and reorganizing the garage in preparation for my new 'big' lathe that's arriving tomorrow morning. :baby
It will be done for the Uttoxeter show though.

Beer time I think... :beer2 :beer :onthep
