Ginger Bear, PJ, I forget I am amongst purists here, you are both right, I recognise the pic, that is what mine used to look like before it was boxed and I always refferred to it back then (70's) as a Z1 (then incorrectly it seems, A2) but never really hooked into using the Z1000......tag. So I can oficially order for a Z1000A1 from now, thanks guys really appreciate the help here! :D

The contents of Pandora's second box 2

#33 PostAuthor: colinj » Sat Jun 06, 2009 7:38 pm

Spent the rest of today emptying and then re-filling the box to see what I had, some great news and some not so great, once these are loaded I will have several questions I need to ask you all, the answers will inevitably help me decide which way to go with this.........On we go,

Now to the questions!!

#40 PostAuthor: colinj » Sat Jun 06, 2009 8:17 pm

Sorry if there's too many sort of inconsequential photo's but the main gist is that I know this will take major effort to complete, I am short of a few parts which are going to cost (crank case top & base, fuel tank, panels & tailpiece, wheels & swing-arm) and there will be a lot of paint and chrome to do/re-do, I suppose the main question is, looking at the transmission there was obviously some water residue that has left some surface damage, looking at the cams, there looks to be more than I am comfortable with (This stuff was at the very bottom of the case as it was the heaviest and water may have seeped up a little) so do I go ahead, is this too much to retrieve overall or is it all do-able without being the sultan of Brunei?
If it is do-able, who can I get that you reccommend to look the cams and drive train over to remedy the issues.......Or where do I buy replacements and more to the point what will i be paying-ish?
I look forward to any comment you all have and thanks very much for any help in advance............ :??

Colin..... The comment you've made are spot on.... :|

Several things to consider.....

#1 The road ahead is a long one, and as you say, can be expensive, but...
#2 Depends on where you're going with it.... full concours rebuild, or just a tidy usable Zed :?:
#3 As for cams, cases, etc, with patience, they can be gathered at reasonable prices.
#4 Its a case of Head over Heart, or other way round.
#5 Or, as I think you are considering, sell it as a job lot

Whatever direction you take, there's plenty of chaps on here with good (and some bad) advice

Best of luck matey :!:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

To Do or Not to Do?

#42 PostAuthor: colinj » Sun Jun 07, 2009 9:32 am

Pigford,
Thanks for the comments, I think those definately are the main posers. The aim has always been to restore but to create a streetfighter look, not radical but very tidy.
I am dissapointed with the cams and mainshaft but I recon the mainshaft is simply grubby rather than damaged and can be cleaned by the right people (who are they??? any ideas?). The cams need a professional (again, who? bring on the ideas please!!!) to comment before I decide as re-profiling was done even in the day and there were always other makes available which I would consider if these are mortally wounded.
Sell as a job lot? I don't want to, I have kept the faith for 25 years and really really want the result, (but I am not Minted). If I can get a picture of overall costs then I can make a decision, slow and steady over a year or two (what's 2 more?)? or chuck the towel in it's just not realistic? (God forbid). The pictures serve me in either case, they are a record of where each bit is now as I re-packed for space sake, but they are also up here for comment and to serve to get quotes for chrome n paint to help me decide.
Bring it on guys, To Do or Not to Do? :|

#44 PostAuthor: colinj » Mon Jun 08, 2009 8:00 am

Mick,
just putting a file of photo's together in order to get a quote, I will be asking Mikey to give an estimate once that is done. I am still trying to decide just how far to go with paint n chrome! Thanks for the go for it vote!

Definatly go for it, I think I would be tempted to build it up into a runner and then stip it down again to do all the paint chrome etc. Yhen at least you will no everything is there and it does not take too long to tear it down to do the cosmetics!
