Valve Clearance

#1 PostAuthor: hal » Wed Jun 03, 2009 9:40 am

I am in the process of refurbing my Z1B cylinder head using Debben guides and springs etc my question is is it worth checking the valve clearances before fitting the head in case the valve stem tips need grinding down to achieve the correct clearance?

Hi. There's no need to bench install the cams to check the clearances ( unless you've got base circle ground performance cams ?) just the installed height of the valves which should be between 37.17mm and 38.06mm measured directly from the head where the guide protrudes ( without the spring seat installed ) to the valve stem tip with a depth gauge or small steel rule although APE do a special preset tool which instantly shows if the height is in usable range. 37.57mm to 37.61mm is the std normal measurement which would put you in the mid range of shim around 240.

Thanks for the info zed1015. Just measured the valve stem height with a digital veriner and all the measurments are well within tolerance --- makes a change for something to go right!
