Z1100 will only run on three - plugs and coils question.

#1 PostAuthor: Sanderson » Tue Jun 02, 2009 10:37 am

Hello - Finally got the Z1100 running but we are having problems as it is only running on three cylinders.
It has new plugs and HT leads, it has good compression and is sparking okay.
Just wondering if the plugs and coils are not matched up??
Two coils - four plugs - can anyone tell me what goes where?

It is a 1983 A3 by the way.
Thanks

Sam

coils fire 1&4 and 2&3.

If it's running on 3 then coils are ok - tried changing plug cap & plug ? I once had a plug cap that broke up internally but looked ok.

If thats not it then i'd start looking at carbs.

Hmm - the plugs, caps and HT leads are all new - any idea how a person would get their hands on a set of carbs for a 1983 Z1100???

Sam you need to give a bit more information. There are coil, plug and HT lead combinations which are questionable.

What is the battery voltage and what is the co-responding voltage at the coils?

In theory they are the same (ish) but losses will account for greater amounts of voltage drops under certain 'known' conditions.

Question; are you using resistor caps on high output coils for example?
You appear to have resistor caps so which coils are they?

Have you set all the pilot air screws to the same amount. Manual says 'X' number of turns out from fully closed.
Did this with mine and even with fully clean carbs, a colourtune shows that the true 'balanced' value for pilot air ranges from 1 - 3 3/4 turns out from fully closed to get an identical mixture for quarter throttle on mine. (Vacuum carbs)

With the carb that needs set to 3 3/4 turns out from closed,... set at factory; 1 1/4 turns out from closed, it will only run on three on mine.

NB. the sensitivity of the pilot air jet screws isn't altered and still responds equally at this level of discrepency. i.e. half a turn will have a significant effect on tickover, engine sound, throttle response, and colour on the colourtune with such a wide variety of base settings.

Did you get that advance and retard unit concentric?
Any discrepency between the pickups and proximity of the magnets from one to the other.

Which ignition set up have you got??
If its Dyna 'S' i have a full set of factory electrical checks with values resistances and tests to conduct to eliminate component failure.

Could try to run a temporary earth (rig up with a couple of connectors) from the battery to the coil brackets just to see!

Looking at the picture of the bike it has aftermarket filters. Are any of them wet with fuel or water or excessively dirty?

Which other issues have you already dealt with?
Fuel filter, float levels, compressions, shim clearances.
Does the plug on the misfiring cylinder come out wet with fuel when engine has stopped?
Is it oily?
Are the other three plugs black around the outer rim when run on tickover for a few minutes.
Do the plugs have an overall whitish grey or orangey tint to them after running on three?
You say good compression, can you post the compression pressure up here in PSI.
Any difference between any cylinder and any other?
You also mentioned good sparks but with an old plug opened up to 4mm will it still spark that plug?

Do you have access to a timing light with an inductive (magnetic) pickup?
If so any irregularity with fluctuating timing marks on tickover will indicate a problem which should give you a direction to head off in.
