Z1000A1/2 HEAD ON Z1B BARRELS

#1 PostAuthor: martinz1b » Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:07 pm

Would a head from a Z1000A1/2 fit straight onto a standard Z1B motor. Or is it a non starter :rake

I'm just looking at saving myself a few bob until Gordon Brown decides to sod off.

Thanks

Yes it fits. It's more or less the same head. Any head before the J and GPZ will bolt straight on. J and GPZ will also fit with an APE idler adaptor.

You'll probably need the later exhaust clamps as they have larger 8mm studs. see if you can get them thrown in with the head

Thanks, I have three engines in my shed two Z1000's and my original Z1B, I will be taking a head off an engine that I bought last year. Hopefully it will be sound. I will also be fitting a Harris pipe so I won't need the clamps straight away. I am eventually going to get the Z1B head alloy welded to repair the stud mountings. I am going to see if there is enough space on the Z1B head to have 8mm studs fitted. But that doesn't look promising at first sight.

The head on my z1r is an early Roche modified race spec z1 head which had 6mm studs . Most were stripped/butchered when i got it so i drilled and re-tapped them to 8mm with no problems, Plenty of meat still left on the casting and just been looking at one of my spare Z1000a heads with 8mm's as std and it isn't any different or beefed up in that area.

I'll have a closer look, I was probably just assuming the Z1000 mounts would be beefier. A local engineer / alloy welder is going to take a look when I get it stripped out to see if he can do me a cost effective repair. I would have preferred to have the original head on, but as it is never going to be a show bike it shouldn't really matter.

Why worry. it's essentialy the same head, Use the original cam cover and only a trainspotter with a magnifying glass will tell the difference .
