Correct Float level

Hey lads, I have done a search a couple of times to try and find the info I need before asking but could'nt find it.

I'm changing the main jets on my 26mm carbs on the A4 from 115 to 120 ( yep, stuck on k&n's, Dyna s ignition, dyna coils and leads) so decided while the carbs were out to give them a second strip and clean.

Everything seems in good order but I want to make sure the float height is correct, does anyone have the right measurement for them?, I presume you also do the measurement with the float just about resting on the needle????

I'll get a hold of one those handy float measuring tools from debben at some stage but at the minute all I have is a steel rule, (the bike has swallowed up enough money aready and I have two more to care for as well )
Any help much appreciated.

Get an old drain plug, drill a hole through it and solder a piece of pipe in (kunifer 10 brake pipe is good). Stick a piece of plastic pipe on the end and use a steel rule for the scale.

I was thinkin along those lines myself Rich, but the bowls on mine do'nt have the 17mm drain plug, they have that tiny little drain screw set at an angle, still might be able to sort somethin the same way.
I thought maybe there was a measurement for the float height being checked with the bowl off while lightly seated on the needle.

Z0A, there is a measurement given with the bowl off.
The measurement for the Z900-A4 is 22 mm +/- 1 mm. (Info- Clymer)
The measurement is, with the carb body upside-down, the distance from the gasket area, to the top of the round surface of the float.
Don't bother to remove the gasket, just estimate its thickness and make adjustment for it.
Make sure each side of the floats are within 1mm of each other.

Using the plastic pipe method mentioned by Hillbilly & Rich, in situ, the level should be about about half way down the bowl flange, erring towards the bottom edge.

Cheers Mate, , that's what I was lookin for, (must download a copy of one of those clymer manuals, they seem to be the best ones).
I'd just rather set them right while the carbs are stripped down, and I have new float bowl gaskets here so the old ones are binned anyway.
Now I got the figures I can finish the job, thanks again, much appreciated.
