JMC swing arm.

#1 PostAuthor: Steve R » Sat Apr 18, 2009 9:51 pm

Possibly the worst service from any company I have experienced in the last few years.

Having waited about 7 months for my JMC swing arm, and been given excuse after excuse, tonight I have tried to fit it.

THe standard swing arm fitted fine, and the Dresda one I fitted a couple of years ago fitted fine. So was not expecting any problems.

Several hours later I have given up in disgust for the time being.

First problem it did not fit between the frame tubes, just too tight after a lot of mucking about filing the frame and the spacers in the swing arm finally got it in and went to get a Becks to celebrate. Swung it up to bolt the shocks on to find it hits the lugs which the exhausts would bolt too I presume if I had a 4 into 4 on the frame tubes that support the pillion pegs.

I have been filing away at them for a while with a knackered old file but will have to get to B and Q in the morning to buy an angle grinder.

Well pissed off, and its made of such a soft alloy that its now scratched.

In addition I am not impressed with the fact the shocks bolt on to a plate on one side rather than having a plate on either side, nor am I impressed with the back axle arrangement which has a nyloc nut each side meaning to adjust the chain etc. I will need 2- 24mm sockets, and any way are you not supposed to not reuse nyloc nuts?

They arent cheap either and I wish I had saved my money

So got an angle grinder this morning and attacked the frame, ground plenty off the offending bits, and painted them up. Got myself a good 5mm clearance on either side.
Home straight I thought, I prefer to just change one thing at once so decided to put the standard wheel back in.
First problem attaching the brake torque arm to the swing arm, the standard bolt has a shoulder which will not fit through the hole on the tab on the JMC, if I put some washers on the bolt it will not go through far enough to put the split pin on, if I use a standard bolt that will go through the torque arm rattles around. So I either need a sleeve for the torque arm, a bolt with a shorter shoulder? Or get the shoulder on the existing bolt turned down to a lesser diameter after the bit that goes in the torque arm?

Next problem, tightened the 2 nuts on the axle up having bought another 24mm socket, tightened them up good and hard and guess what the axle is not tight enough the wheel will still move, not easily but it will move, I must have tightened the nuts up to the end of the thread and there is not quite enough thread for the axle to be properly tight. Yes all the correct spacers are there and again no problems with the standard swing arm or the second hand Dresda I fitted.

Both these are very much safety related, especially the axle as it seems tight on the Nuts, and if I had not checked I would have assumed that it was on right.

So I will see what they have to say at JMC in the morning, but having paid what I think was a lot of money and waited months for the damm thing to arrive to say I am unimpressed would be an understatement.

Rang JMC when I finally got through ( They can not hear the phone when machines are going?!!!) I told them of the problems that I was having. They were totally unconcerned as to it not fitting advising me that this was on their website that it there products may not fit old bikes???!!! And that adjustements may need to be made!

With regards to the axle they thought their tolerances may be a bit too tight and to send it back and they would take 2mm of the middle and extend the threads. Told me they would promise to turn it round same day. I sent it monday recorded and they got it tuesday ,they were as good as their word and I got it back this morning.. They have made a sleeve up to fit the torque arm to solve that problem.

Its now on and does look good!!

The Lesters are on now as well!!

So just the tappets to shim tomorrow and some new rubbers for the top cam idler and its finished (for now   )

MOT booked for Tuesday. Then its running in and all ready for the Yorkshire rally as long as there are no disasters

Bloody hell Steve i admire your patience! I think there was another thread where i said that i`d only ever heard bad things about JMC, but quite the opposite for Metmachex, not that that`s much consolation for you, but serves as a warning to others. That really does take the piss for what is big bucks for a bespoke service, then crap aftersales once they`ve got your money.
Glad it looks good though, and that you finally got it sorted, any chance of some pics?

Steve, I can totally sympathise. If you check out the thread 'JMC I don't know what all the fuss is about' you'll see my photos of my JMC for my ZRX and where the chain hits the bracket holding the chainguard. When I contacted them about it I got the same unconcerned attitude you did. I know someone else who got a JMC for their Z1000 and had the same problem as you. If anybody reading this is considering getting a JMC swinging arm I would suggest you think long and hard about it because you'll be getting into a whole world of hassle!

Ordered some bearings and end caps for my Jmc 8 weeks ago, still chasing them and have spoken to them several times, last week it had been posted and obviously must have got lost in the post!! All my other stuff arrives ok though!

Phoned them everyday this week no answer, if it was'nt for the fact that it the order was for only £46 I would report them to trading standards.

By the way to fit mine I had to mod the brake arm as well and the chaine adjustemnet is crap.
Though they look nice they are not worth the hassle!

Mind you to give JMC credit about one thing they are absolutley brilliant at and that is

............Taking the money in advance, that bit was through the same day I ordered the bits! 8 weeks ago :??

After the problem with the chain hitting the bracket I thought I'd check a few things just out of curiosity, be interested in your comments. When I Emailed the pix over to them they said that everything was within tolerance. I just expected everything to be a bit more 'lined up'. There's no problem with the bikes handling though......
