Correct Stanley Lens for 73?....

#1 PostAuthor: MaineKZ » Sun Apr 12, 2009 8:50 pm

I've ended up with a right old selection of genuine Stanley lenses - can someone tell me exactly what embossed id numbers denote the correct lens for the 73?
I see the parts book shows different part numbers for front and rear lenses - does this mean they're different in some way?

Just out of interest, I have 2 lenses which have a 'frosted' internal finish on the circular 'face' section - with normal translucent sides - does anyone know what model/year these belong to?

As far as I know the frosted lenses are for the rear indicators to cut down on glare for people behind you. :D

Sure Steve S is right, the "clearer" ones go to the front.

MainKZ, I take it you are talking about "Blinker" lenses. Are the frosted lenses brand new? I have never seen any decrepancy between '72 to '76 front and rear "Stanley" blinker lenses. I'm interested to find out more!

I recall hearing that very early Z1's had no embossing on indicator lenses....but I could be wrong.

Chris,
As previous, frosted ones at the rear on EU bikes, as for correct markings you'll need to take a look at my Z1B when down next. The correct frosted lenz is no longer available but I recently bought complete indicators from daytona on the original Pt Nos.

The more writing on them the later they are, the early ones had very little on them.

Davy & Taffus, "The more writing, the later they are". This will not help in differentiating between front (orange-clear) and rear (orange frosted) as some are suggesting there is! I don't think it closes the case, although, it does give credence to GBH's theory, that very early Z1 blinker lenses may have no writing on lens.

MaineKZ observation that there were different part # for Z1 front & rear blinker lenses, is significant.

TailiftChris,. if you don't mind, what is the page number in Micky Hesse's book (Black Classic Book Vol1), where reference is made to this clear or frosted lenses. Perhaps it's in the latest volume?

Garn.

I have the volume 3 book where it says "US alle klar, EU vorn klar und hinten matt" on page 48.

I do not know what the spec is for the AU bikes.

Davy's probably summed it up. My 72 has little writing whereas the later lenses have shittt loads. There was a change to regulations somewhere in 1972 or 73 (probably USA) as the Hoonda lenses also changed and had shittt loads of writing on, which made reference to DOT and such. Also the later Hoonda lenses are a different color as are (from what I can tell) the 72 versus the 73 lenses. Can't say about the EU though.
This really is getting anal, but I just canna help it Jimmy

Garn if you would care to read the post again, Main originally asked.

"can someone tell me exactly what embossed id numbers denote the correct lens for the 73?".
The other part of his question was "just out of interest" As he put it, so i think i summed it up ok for him??????????????????

Davy, sure you answered the question!. I just thought you would go for the extra marks..... and explain about the frosted & clear lenses. Let's not make it too interesting.
