Right this is what i done, before i started on the problem at hand i had an oil leak out the cam cover so thought id do that first, while the cam cover was off thought id check the valve clearences, 2 were tight so i done those, first i checked the ignition side of things and all seemed ok there nice bright blue sparks at plugs, but the bullet connectors to the coils were a bit slack so just nipped them up a bit to make more solid connection, checked the voltage to the coils and that checked out ok.
So to the fuel side of things, checked the fuel cap first as rich suggested the breather hole maybe blocked and as i had it re chromed recently i may have put it back together wrong but it checked out ok, fuel tap next, pulled the 2 fuel pipes off put it on prime and fuel was only coming out of only 1 of the out lets, stripped tap apart and found water in the tap how it got there i dont know, blew it out and dried it and filled it filled with fuel put it on prime and fuel flowed from both out lets, tlc suggested just draining the bowls and should be ok but for my own piece of mind i stripped the carbs and blew the jets through found a couple worn needle valves and replaced those from my box of bits, swilled the tank out and put fresh fuel in, put it all back together fired it up took it for a run and now it accelerates all the way to the red line without spluttering problem solved took a while but i guess a problem like this is a process of elimination, thanks everyone for your help happy days again.

If the tank was left half empty for a while, i.e. over the winter then that would explain the water. Glad your sorted Mikey.

It was a 2nd hand tank that was sourced for me after the rear end shunt i had and the first i saw the tank was when it came back from the painters so i dont know the history of it bigmac but you could be right there.

You will always get a small amount of moisture in fuel, blast it up yo the red line frequently to stop it building up :D

It's times like that that you sit down and have a nice cold beer and leave the bike well alone, Things don't cost as much when you've had a chance to to think about them.

When did it last work right?
What have you done since then?
