The shim exchange is a great reason on its own to sign up for membership.
I am down under and received 5 exchange shims post free from UK. At NZ$20 each for new ones exchange was a big $$$$ saver.
I have never tried the cheap tool, using the factory designed clamp which works very well. I would try and purchase one of those if available.
There seems to be a bit of debate at what point of the cam rotation does one make the measurement but I think with the lobe point away from bucket is correct.
Having a micrometer and some decent feeler gauges is a must.
Success is the ability to go from one failure to another without loss of enthusiasm
