Valve Clearances

#1 PostAuthor: bollypne » Wed Mar 25, 2009 7:54 pm

Hi all
Z900 A4. Decided to check valve clearances due to poor running and curiousity. According to the book, clymer. clearances should be 0.05-0.10mm. On checking every valve i can't even slip under a 0.04 mm feeler. So obviously all shims need doing, grrr. And i need a shimming tool. I'm in Leyland if anyone near can lend advise.

Advice please.

thanks lads.

Valve clearances

Try Gerry the Chairman, he manages a shim swop system, he may also have a shim removal tool you can rent or borrow? The shim swop system worked great when I used it.

Jerry Humpage, his number is in the club magazine.
Four pipes rule, anything else is second best.

Not that expensive tbo, £20 from Z-power new. If I remember many folk (Debben etc) recommend running much larger clearances than the manual suggests.

Bite the bullet and buy a shim tool. Once you find out what shims you have under the valves, you may be able to swap them around to get the tolerances right. You will need at least one to start the process. Will probably only need a couple a sizes in the end. Then make a log of what you have under what valve. The next time you measure you will know what will be need to correct.

Cheers, a tool has been ordered. Got to come in handy and any one in my area can borrow, for the cost of a beer!
