ignition question

#1 PostAuthor: bakey » Wed Mar 25, 2009 3:57 pm

Right lads

the ignition is a bit dodgy on my bike...by dodgy i mean you can take the key out while the engine is running! I noticed the other day when i was riding it and the key nearly fell out.

anyway, it looks like ill be replacing it but what i dont really want is a handfull of different keys. Currently 1 key does ignition, tank and seat and another for the steering lock. Will tells me this is correct though?

anyway, is there anyway you can make a new ignition barrel take a different key? anyone done this or maybe someone is a part-time locksmith?

Bakey,
Any key will open the fuel cap, so if you bought a new ignition, at least the key would fit that, just seperate for steering lock & seat lock. :|

That`s how it left the factory.

I was thinking of buying new ignition switch from Z Power (for Z1R)
I believe any key fits petrol tank, seat lock & helmet hook?
But I had not thought about the steering lock –

Does this mean I would still need the old key for the steering lock?

lads would a Z1B ignition work in my bike? dont know squat about the amount of pins/connectors etc

can anyone confirm the steering lock question? will has assured me that steering locks are always a different key...obviously people on here under that assumption. Not that i doubt your rivetting counting skills though chris :D

there's a set here, johnnys vintage motorcycles, i cant seem to do a link, if you google it they have an ebay shop, you will find one in the z1 section bakey, it looks like the steering lock comes with it, so is the same key.

"anyway, is there anyway you can make a new ignition barrel take a different key?"
Yes you will need to carefully bend the retainers out on the casing and they go through the back to release the tumblers which are held in be a sprung catch. Having the correct key in helps to align the tumblers for removal. file /swap the tumblers around for the new key. Remember how it comes to bits and don't lose the small springs

right lads, 794 on my steering lock and 794 on the key for it only works that lock.

the ignition key is a copy anyway - got SILCA written on it and also number 759 although that might be complete fluke. fits everything but the steering lock. No numbers on ignition barrel and i cant see any numbers on seat lock either.

might be looking at 3 keys here which is crap tbh

spoke to TLC and he started talking about key numbers for the models  so does anyone on here know what keys match either my model or for more respect...who knows the full number compatability for the zed range :?:
