Its important not to have the power supply feeding the coils constantly..... as in leaving ignition on for a long time, coz this can overheat coils & burn them out.

Not that I think this has happened, just a point to note :!:

If you wire direct power to the coils, they wont spark :!: You need to supply a switched power.... as in a quick on/off to get they to spark. A constant supply won't work. But like the points open/closing to get a sudden belt :!:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Guy's I have read this thread and am left wondering could the problem be linked to the engine kill switch on the handlebar :?: .
Just trying to throw in a few ideas :??

So how long did you leave them connected up?
Are you still running points?
Have you also connected the feed to your dyna?
Have you measured the rest of the circuit to establish what voltage drops you have?

Bike cut out a couple of times, seemed like fuel starvation but couldn't get a spark. Thought maybe points or condenser so replaced with Dyna (same coils), still no spark. As quick test, connected +ve battery direct to each coil, got spark on one but not the other, then nothing. Not sure how to check for voltage drop across sytem or check kill switch ??
