Exhaust Baffle Material

Talking about "four into ones" in particular and spurred on by thread "Exhausting Business" in Discussions, where it is generally advocated that oil be poured/ sprayed into the baffle be prevent corrosion.

My question is: What is the best material to use to wrap around the baffle tube?

I had a problem with lack of performance with a particular muffler. Tried another and the difference was remarkable. Now looking at both mufflers, they are approx the same dimensions and the same physical shape, the only difference apparent, was one had the perforated baffle tube wrapped in insulating wool and wired on, the other was the same, however, it was matted with black soot and oil soaked. This later one (sooty & oil soaked) was the poor performer. Hence, it looked as the presence of oil over a period may effect performance.

These exhaust systems were not expensive high performers, they were just run of the mill .. Tranzac or Walker etc. Anyone with some good ideas as to what material to wire on around the baffle tube? It's a bit loud with-out any baffle material wrapped around the tube.

there was a thread about this very subject a couple of weeks back, check the forum Garn,i think it was Davy Docherty, but i may be wrong. i dont know myself, once people wake up or come to , depending on what sort of night theyve had, you should get some new answers.

Thanks TailiftChris & MickZ1A, I did get some clues from those threads in Exhaust Baffle.
Interesting suggestion from Rich... "Stainless Steel Wool" I think I'll give that a go, wrapped in a thin (single) wrap of insulation wool tied with SS wire. I think that SSwool would breath better. I'm talking about the SSWool that looks like a continious stream of lathe cutting/ swaf, bunched together. Any other good ideas?

The stainless wire wool is used to stop the glass getting burnt and blown out with the heat and pressure. It is applied in a thin layer and is more "brillo pad" texture than lathe swarfe. The usual practice is to wrap the glass over that for the sound deadening qualities.

I had a 4-2 stainless steel system made for my Z1000a1 and the silencers in that are stuffed with stainless steel wool and I have not had any problems with performance etc. Actually allows a bit more gas to flow freely and still does not muffle the sweet exhaust note to much!

These SS scourers look the business, I'll open them out like a doughnut and slip them onto the perforated tube... Don't think I'll worry about wraping them in insulation wool. I'll try it out first.





Three big scourers and two smaller ones. I'll let you know what it performs and sound like. Thanks Rich, for the initial idea.

Just wanted to report back for those interested:"The SS Scorers work a treat as a baffle Material"!
The exhaust note is clear and not too loud (I believe it would pass the road authorities db testing). I will road test it for the next few weeks and let the forum know if any deteriortion is felt/ heard and if any mods are necessary to this 4 into one muffler baffle.
