Hi Barrie,
it may help if you could let us know the following;
How many miles has it done?
Has it been like this since you first owned it?
Does this happen on every start-up?
Does it have a standard air-box and exhaust?
Does it run/start OK once you have cleaned the l/h plug?

Once you have posted a reply to the above, i am sure some of us can come up with a few things to try :D

BARRIE`S Z1, try swapping the leads & plugs round if u can on 1 & 4! If still dodgy only on left (#1) this will eliminate electical system. Could be air leak on carb rubber, common on old perished rubber bits! :roll:

If its only on initial start-up, and you've checked the basic electrical bits then I check the emulsifier tube is clear on that carb and ensure the hole in the carb base that the emulsifier tube sits in is clear too. Had a very similar issue with my Z1B.

If the problem disappears shortly after 'warm-up' it may be in the choke system? :?: As in it ain't working proper on left one! :evil:

COULD A STIKY VALVE CAUSE THIS PROBLEM

I did have this problem several years ago, but only when i left the bike on the side stand. Now, when it's in the garage, i always put it on the centre stand.
Hey presto, no problem.
Some people have a theory that while it's on the side stand, oil runs to the l/h side of the engine, resulting in the problem you have.

Barry, I had a similar problem, took me a year to find.
I noticed one day after pulling the carb bowls off that two were very clean (not used much). These two were, (you guessed it!) served by the same fuel line.

Further inspect showed that this fuel line was partially blocked at the cock, where the inner part of the line had doubled up on itself. It had limited power at the start, however would run OK on a trip. I used to replace spark plugs, thinking that was the problem. I could imagine it giving a similar problem with just a one line system.
