Absolutely beautiful.

I notice you haven't filed the fin edges on the front of the engine, or is that just the photos. I've seen this on a couple of other bikes - did the factory change this at some point in the production run?

When I bought this bike I PROMISED myself it would just get a nice fettling and off we go. Now look at the fine mess I've got myself into :roll:

Ted - thanks for kind words. On the fins: I don't think the front fins were dressed from the factory - that's what I've been advised anyhow - think some guys do them to personal taste. This motor had original finish when I got it and no sign of front dressing.

Thanks for taking the time to photo the build, looks great and a credit to the time and effort you are taking in making sure its done right first time.

ps I am very jealous not of the bike but the fact you can spend so much time on your bike. I get 30 mins here and there on mine then its DIY shopping pick the kids up etc etc. :(

Same here Ian, I am desperate for more 'brownie points'...... :roll:

Had to do a bit of gardening last weekend....... Well actually it was digging up some 'St Johns Wort' coz the hound was chewing it :shock:

Unfortunately, after 10 minutes of furious hacking with the fork.... it broke :wink:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

You'll be happy to hear it ain't all plain sailing round 'ere. But I say there's always a deal to be done. Mine was: give me 6 months to do the resto - or I'm leaving you. :D

Naaaaa - I said I'd build loads of nice timber garden items she wants once the weather improves. Will eat into riding time a little but seemed fair.

None of the production or pre-production bikes has the fins dressed along the front side, although, I do have an image of a Standard Z1 being tested at Daytona on 26th Sep't '72 that didn't have a black engine at all.

So that means that nearly everone who has restored one of these has painted the engine wrong?

I've tried looking for some old photos, but cannot find any with enough detail.

None of the Z1's had the fins polished at the front Maine is correct..

Hi Chris

Absolutely fantastic engine rebuild I have to say you are setting a standard here that I doubt I could ever hope to match with the Z1A I have bought - the one you kindly had a look at the photos of - many thanks for that I really appreciated your input. My bike - I say that because it is now mine should be in the UK mid April. I will be following the rest of your rebuild with huge interest, it will help a lot except that I don't have your ability!

Keep it up this is going to be good - very very good. :D

Well Dogz and Mr.B finally showed up late yesterday afternoon, reeking of beer and Emmental cheese after a mammoth 22hr Whist & Fondue lock-in at the Peacock.

I shit you not, those guys are ANIMALS :shock:

Pics will do the talking, basically all you do is flip the motor onto its clutch side drop the frame over the top, bolt up and you're all set! Literally half hour job.

Lastly we man-handled her back onto the Big Red - when she next rolls off that she'll be (nearly) finished. I just hope that'll be before Ace Day.
