all good info,thanks..... my carbs are off the bike ,so it is easy to work on.... would think this is a very tricky job to do while they are on the bike, as well as taking a chance of dropping gauge into the carb then the carbs would have to come off

Surfdeneige, air box OFF, and i'd have thought CARBS OFF to! Never tried with em fitted, but probably too awkward still on bike!
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

It can be more than 0.7mm, as discussed with ball-bearing method, however, we then need to watch that we are "in-range" with the idle adjustment screw.

For instance, it is possible for all the slides to be adjusted at, say 2mm. This may affect the position of the single/combined idle adjustment screw, so that idling is too fast and cannot be adjusted, as it it is out of the range .

Sorry the above response was answered by Pigford. (I forgot to turn to page two!)
To answered BunnysZ~.... Engine side!
I think the gauging should be done with the carbs off as it is the measurement easily seen from the engine side. It is the measurement of the slide gap (opposite side to the cut-away). It may be done with carbs mounted on engine .... I've never done it!
