Happy New Year All!
So spent some time working on the z650 over the break (photos soon in project session) and for every problem solved I've uncovered new ones...
The bike is a bit of a mongrel. I knew the engine wasn't original, but I thought it was a D2 engine in a C2 frame. Having spent some time with the Kawasaki parts manual, it appears it's an H2 engine at the earliest... But after all the work I've put in I love it anyway.
So a while back I'd ordered new points and alternator covers with the Kawasaki logo in upper case, rather than lower case, as I really prefer that. Having looked closer at the weekend it turns out the flywheel/alternator/fixings are completely different on the newer casing with the 'wrong' lower case font than the older one I wanted to use.
This is what the old casing I want to use looks like:

This is what the flywheel that was on the running bike looks like:

I've checked the part numbers for the crankshaft on the two engines and they are completely different - so the question is, if I get an old style alternator and stuff it in the old casing, and put an old style flywheel on the crankshaft, is it all going to work?
Any advice gratefully recieved, as always... but I have an expensive bid in on the stuff in the first link, so any quick suggestions would be brilliant.

Interchangeable Generators on a z650?
Currently restoring a 78 z650
Hi
theres loads of info in the http://www.kz650.info/index.htm site
the cover with the 3 allen bolts on the outside is a B1 cover, later covers come with those bolts on the inside, (B2 onwards, I have an early B2 which has internal bolts but different case for "Kawasaki" on either side)
I think there were 2 B2 models in 78.
You could also try posting on KZ info or KZrider both good sites

alternator cover
Thanks Taffus - will do - is your alternator cover on the b2 lower, or uppercase?

Reg/rec
One last question, taffus, thanks...
Now I know what I'm looking for I've seen a uppercase kawasaki cover with no external bolt holes - that should do the job; I just need to find one that's not scuffed into oblivion. Does your early b2 have a combined reg/rectifier or the separate bits?
