Valve buckets and shims

#1 PostAuthor: fredswat » Fri Nov 07, 2008 5:24 pm

I have dismantled my cylinder head for vapour blasting. I am intending to fit new springs and to relap the valves in as the guides look ok. In my haste I neglested to mark which buckets and shims came from which valves. Is this a major problem or does it just mean that I will have to set up valve clearances from scratch ? I have identified which valves fitted in to which valve guide. Any help would be appreciated

it is not a big problem, you will need to reshim anyway after a valve grind. the buckets are not matched so i would not worry

Just a tip, do get the whole thing ultrasonically cleaned as I failed to do this an I ended up rebuilding the engine as minute parcticles of grinding paste got left behind, even after an overnight soak in petrol and alchohol. This damaged to bore and valves. I also had to change the valve guides as they only showed minute cracks after ultrasinic cleaning. they were no visible fater the vapour blast I had done. I had the valve seats ground in by a proper machinist. Not by hand, this also caused trouble first time around

I used a place in Southampton very good people Southern Ultrasonic Cleaning Services 01489 780030.

I eventually got the bike reassembled and it kinda ran in a half baked sort of way but then its a 32 year old bike so I cant expect miracles.
good luck
Phil
