charging system

#1 PostAuthor: big green bus » Mon Oct 20, 2008 4:23 pm

a follow club member is having prob,s with his z1000g. it is a 1980 usa import fuel injected. he is having prob,s with the charging system bat fully charged kicks over no worries but goes flat after an hour or two. you cannot turn the headlight off. he was wondering if he could fit a complete charging system off a z1000mk2 or simmilar the usa one is hard to get hold of and is bigger too, so he would need to fit the whole lot. any ideas anybody

^^^ to summarise, the headlamp is on, dipped, when ignition is on?

simple fix is to remvoe the headlamp bulb! :P

the charging system should be nore than capable of powering the headlamp and have some in reserve; typically it throws out 30 or more Amps, headlamp would need about 5 A.

It is worth checking the existing unit is working and fixing that; it is hard to imagine Kawasaki getting such simple sums wrong.

Is there something else that may be drining the battery? does is go down when everything is switched off? what is current drain when ignition is on and headlamp bulb is removed.?

What's the alternator like, if it is a STD Mk2 one it should power with dipped on all the time. I run the Harris with one dipped on. no problems - but mine does get revved
If you are talking of changing the rotor / stator the rotor taper changes from Mk2 to J / gpz and they won't fit.

Ideas - Has the battery got an internal short - sludge at bottom does this. Does the battery self discharge or is there another drain in the system somewhere. charge it up and see how quickly it loses charge off the bike. earth connections, 30 year old crap wires.
Does the alternator put out sufficient charge magnets / stator damage. If they magnets are getting weak they may be able to be re-magnetised.
