Usually its the shock absorber springs fitted in the back of the clutch basket....

This is quite common coz they get slack & sometimes break with use/abuse/age... :shock:

Only cure is engine split (to remove clutch) and fit good basket or repair (kits are readily available) :evil:

If its not slipping or juddering, then don't worry too much.... :wink:
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

SO I TAKE IT YOU CANT REMOVE THE BASKET WITHOUT A STRIPDOWN ?

Only on later models.... without a kickstart.... :wink:

The kickstart unit is in the way so the clutch cannot be removed...

I believe some people modified the casings so the clutch can be removed without a full stripdown, but that was for 'racers' and the like :shock:

Its not uncommon for the larger Jap bikes of the late 70's - early 80's to suffer from clutch rattle (like GS/GSX... etc).

It could even be the main bearing behind the clutch, but these rarely cause problems.

i wouldn't worry too much mate, it "character" :!:

Your right there piggy my GS1000 suffered with this and it was the clutch basket needle roller bearing changed it once and it cured it but the rattle gradually returned and never changed it again and it went on like that with no problems for another 10 years.

I take it you've tried having the carbs balanced,just a thought as if they're out of balance it can cause clutch/trans rattles.Would try that first before stripping the clutch down.
Got the Rex, just the Kat to get now...
