Rickman / Harris / Moto Martin Gearing?

#1 PostAuthor: Jon » Sun Sep 21, 2008 9:48 am

Just out of curiousity what gearing are you guys running?

My Harris is 998cc, olde Kent race cams, welded crank, mild ported head wiv stainless valves, 29mm carbs, belmouths, etc. Im running gearing 15F 36R on 630 pitch with 18" wheels. Good for bout 140-ish top end tho thats too fast for little mountain roads round ere.

Just curious as your rickmans/harris`s/moto martins, etc are all probably bout same weight as mine. Mine weighed in at 190Kg with fuel at mot weigh in. Gonna need chain n sprockets some point soonish n wondering if I should change gearing sits at about 5.5K-6K at 80 or thereabouts in 5th which is where I sit 99% of time as no traffic or junctions up ere. Just feels a bit high, but then its is on a straight through exhaust.

Anyone any advice/numbers on different gearing setups?

I prefer slightly lower geared bikes...

Better acceleration, nicer round town in low gear, etc.....

Depends what you want out of it....... 140 mph is a BAN & JAIL

Best to keep largest front as possible (less chain strain) and adjust rear...

Get a couple of rears (only £25 ea) and experiment whilst all stuffs new

Try +2 teeth more on rear  Won't loose too much top end :P
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Hi Jon,my Rickman has 15/36(630) with standard engine. But it can rev in to the red easily .It does have an open Harris on it ,was test on Skye and works very well
Got the Rex, just the Kat to get now...

Rickmans probably very similar weight to mine so maybe my gearings spot on then. Pulls to redline in top easily and lifts front wheel through first few gears.

Just feels a bit buzzy at 80mph when its sitting close to 6K on rev counter. I know its not straining the motor tho as no load on it really just higher revs. As I said tho my can is stupidly loud!  Think Im just imagining its straining even tho its not even near coming on cam at 80mph.

Quick through the gears n returns good 50 mpg average. Just weighing up my options before new sprockets n chain required.

Jon. I've converted over to 530 on my Saxon Rickman and am running 18th front and 38th rear.
Mind you it runs a turbo so is a different kettle of fish I suppose.
Sits happily at 5000rpm @ 85mph.
