I have fitted two splitlink camchains in the past and never had any problems. Take your time and there is no reason for it to be any weaker than a normal chain.

Pigford as long as you're using the right tool not a hammer to do the link it's no different to endless one, I've done mine last year when refreshing the top end and am confident reving it right to the redline

When the previous owner replaced the tensioner bits, I assume they only replaced the rod - try putting a new spring in the tensioner.
