engine clatter

#1 PostAuthor: GregZ » Sun Sep 07, 2008 3:36 pm

First thanks to all as I have been doing alot of post and you guys ar always helpful !
I am still sorting out the 73. As posted before the previous owner had a denco kit he told me 1050 (i'm thinking it is a 1015cc. stock carbs have big 120 mainjets. Engine has super compression in the 150psi range. I checked the shims all are good athough two exhuast are tight and next week shop will re-shim it for me. motor has no smoke ,healthy
Also will be adding smoothbores ,waiting for a new float and some jets.
Anyway. There is a little engine clatter during excelleration..from the top end. cruising speeds motor sounds good. Just a littler clatter when heavy on the throtle.
Some mates tell me the 73 cases/covers are thiner so the motors are noisy?? also been told the 73 is lighter that a z1a or z1b
So shoulod I worry or is a little clatter normal on a built motor?
thanks

GregZ,

Clatter...... :|

Not pinking :?: A tinkling noise when engine under load, bit like marbles rattling :??

Clatter could be cam chain tension or top idler wheel worn :?:

The valve clearances will make a bit of a 'ticking' noise....

Cam end float can also sound a bit like this... but cannot be easily cured :??

If bike runs OK & noise doen't get worse - just check top end afet a few 100 miles & maybe oil for any signs of wear or metal particles....

Remember, a 40 year old design & air cooled engine can be a bit nosiy :P
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Thats very pretty :D

The marble noise is most likely 'pinking' or pre-ignition...

Caused by over advanced timing - try retarding it a few degrees... Should be +40 deg as standard, but try 35degs, if stops, gradually advance until you can get near to 40 as poss... for best performance.

Also check you have the correct adv/ret mechanism... the early ones have a different rating to later models....

A higher grade/octane fuel can eliminate the problem too

If this don't cure it, it could be carbon build up on the pistons or cylinder head :?:
