I thought it about time I had a go at posting up some piccies of my effort.....

I bought this about 18 months ago off eBay. Classic case of buyer beware because shiny on the surface may hide a multitude of sins. It came with a huge wedge of receipts including £800 on an engine refurb but the clutch started to slip on the way home! After discovering just what someone can do with epoxy resin I thought it easier to swap in the engine from my GPz1100 to keep it on the road. A puncture, leaking fork seals and dodgy electrics prompted a refurb which started last August. Here is the start point:



My plan was to create a streetfighter project that was still sympathetic to the original ELR styling and create what I hope will be a usable and good looking bike. I have kept all the original ELR bits so it could go back together if needed. Here it starts to come apart:





Once in bits all the rusty metal bits, engine casings, barrels, head etc went off to Griff's Reality Motorworks in Bristol to be powder coated. Cant recommend them enough - great job, reasonable price and very nice people!

Various forays on to eBay got me a ZRX1100 swinging arm, front forks off a FZR600, back wheel from a ZXR400 and a GPz1100A front wheel which now sports R1 floating disc and AP racing calipers. As it starts to come together.....

My job takes me to the US every so often so on my last trip I invested in a set of works performance shock absorbers. I wanted the traditional piggy back type shocks but a misunderstanding between me and the guy at Works Performance meant I ended up with a set of remote reservoir shocks instead. Initial horror turned to appreciation though once they were on the bike and I think they look pretty cool. Exchange rate was on my side and they cost me less than 1/2 the price Kipkawa etc quote over here. So here is the assembled rolling chassis:

Now I have a rolling chassis I have turned to the engine. My plan was to use the good bottom end off my GPz mated to the good top end off the motor that came in the bike. Great plan until I found that the engine in the bike when i bought it was GPz1100A and my top end is GPz1100B and they don't fit together!

So I have now got to completely strip my bottom end to drop it in to a decent set of crankcases and build up from there. The engine is where I have spent some decent money. It has been bored to 1170cc with a Wiseco kit and head has been gas flowed and valve seats cut by Tim Blakemore racing in Bristol. I have a set of RS36 flatslides waiting for me in San Francisco for when I go over in 2 weeks and a Kerker pipe with racing baffle in the garage. If it ever stops raining I will start to rebuild the motor. More pictures to follow.

Presumably the RS 36`s will come in your hand luggage.

Any room in there for a V&H pipe ?

I think an exhaust might be a little large to cram in the hand luggage with the duty free stuff

What calipers are you using on the front ? I've just picked up a pair of 98 R1 discs of ebay to fit to the 1000J. Just waiting for them to arrive. I have a pair of 4 pot Nissin calipers but the inside of them is going to clip the wheel spokes if the discs are not spaced out by 5 or 10 mm. What are you doing on yours ?

Pasc - mine has Thunderace fourpot calipers on it at the moment which are quite fat, they clear the ZX6 wheel but as you suggest the discs are spaced out.

Pasc, they are AP twin piston calipers. As you can see from the pictures they are close but seem to be ok. They came off eBay but not sure how old they are because they dont seem to appear on the AP website.

Got my engine casings back from Griff's this week so engine rebuild this weekend. Here's the loosely assembled top half on the workmate just to see what it looks like:




I have now rebuilt the top half of the crankcase without to much grief. Lining up the pins on the crank was a little bit on the fiddly side. Took the opportunity to fit a windage tray and heavy duty output shaft bearing from Debbens whilst it is all in bits. Will be tackling the lower casings after lunch with the objective of having the cases assembled before tea!
