The spring that connects the gear selector to the drum may have come detached. You'll need to remove the clutch Outer & Inner cover to get to this alongwith the front sprocket. From memory if the drum selector pin isn't picked up by the fingers on the end of the gearchange lever you can't get 2nd etc.
Curious it connect from 1st back to neutral though.

Maybe cluch plates gummed up due to layup? Try removing oil filler cap
then operate cluch lever to see if plates seperate.{ look thru` filler hole}.
Also try, engine off,in gear, clutch lever in,kick over while letting lever out slowly. This will indicate if clutch is working.Hope that makes sense.

Maybe on of the centrifugal balls is stuck. Warm engine up then try it into second.

Did you try to put it into second while you were moving or stationary?

You can only select first unless the bike is moving, that is you can't go into second even with the engine running.

It's a kawasaki thing :lool before you take the engine to bits, throw things across the garage etc ride it up the road and try it out.

once i get the bolts ordered for the brake side rearset i'll give it a blast, had it up on the paddock stand about 4 month ago, rear wheel of the ground, running, shifted no probs.suppose that'd explain the bike being in motion thing!anyway,i'm away to stormin the castle for a break from the garage, get the beers in!

There are three small ball bearings that wont allow it to go into 2nd gear unless the bike is moving. Centrifical force spins them to the outside which allows you to shift into 2nd. When you slow down they take turns falling down and locking the gear in place
