The KZ900 Debacle is almost over.

Evening all :))))))))))

I posted some time ago with many problems with my KZ 900. It has been rebuilt and I am running it in. See previous posts on this.

I had noticed it was running lean so I let the mixture screws under the carbs out a turn and its better now. I have mikuni 26mm with no air screw on side as standard its underneath behind the bowls. works fine though.

Anyway I have had a problem with spitting back recently like fuel starvation and lack of power. I removed the cam covers and checked the shims and number 1 cylinder exhaust ( which was ticking) took a 12 thou gauge!!! Not ideal and it was "blued". Replaced at once with correct size.

I also found points gap down to 8 thou on 1 - 4 point. Having done these two minor adjustments last Sunday today I took the old cow for a ride.

I was rather shocked to find that on startup she revved up to 3000 rpm on full choke and died down to 2600 in 20 secs and stabalized. I drove off and turned choke off fully after 1/4 mile. I was still worried she would start coughing and start to drag a bit but the ride was better and better. I got on to the North Circular adn whacked it to 5000 in second and third and she flew like a bloody bird.

So I went into central London and rode about in the worst shitty traffic for an hour and finally up to 70mph home along the Westway.

She never missed a beat once and the only notable thing was a bit of minor clutch rattle which is going to be the carbs out of balance a bit which I already knew about. Number three exhaust is 12' Degrees lower than the other three which may just be jet cleaning needed.

Apart from telling more of my nightmare saga with this bike I wanted to make the point that even if you think all thats wrong is a slight ticking in the shims or the bike seems to drag with power lacking it really is worth checking the basics. I did and its made my year I can tell you.

I hope this dreary recitation helps some people out and I shall balance the carbs this weekend and report the final installment.

Oh I also noticed that upon getting home the oil leak from the usual place (Alternator grommet, which I must replace) had only 2 small drips, rather than the usual level teaspoons worth. So it must be running a bit cooler.

thanks again for all who advised me this last year.
regards
Phil

Nice one Phil, pleased to hear that you've got your Z900 sorted.
It's very often basic thingz that are over-looked that cause the irritating niggles.
I'll never forget a story about a Fireblade owner who heard a strange noise from the motor.Had the engine stripped, checked and rebuilt, noise was still there   Then had the carbs balanced and noise gone
