the petrol tap has 3 positions:
on - off - res
I always assumed that "normal" position was 'ON' and when fuel ran out, the tap is turned to 'RES'. This scheme never worked so I reckoned the 'RES' was blocked.
This evening I have taken the tap out of the tank and there is a long tube corresponding to the 'RES' positon; a stubby plastic filter for the 'ON'.
Therefor eit appears that the main tank is the reserve positon!! This explains why the 'RES' position never worked but is this correct? Seems counter intuitive to me.
ooh, the penny has just dropped - it is how one interprets the position of the tap lever. The lever I can best liken to a hand on a clock - my interpretation was that it "points" from the end to the pivot but is seems that the correct way to read it is when the arm covers the text on the tap. A piccy to make it clearer.
The tap is shown in 'ON' but I read it as 'RES'.

(now you may laugh!)
Incidentally, is there a drawing showing the innard of the tap?
Is the small plastic flter replaceable?
Presumably there is an O-ring between the tap and the tank? (that is what the black mess appeared to have been at one time!)
And same on the other end? Is the metal mesh replaceable? It looks in good nick so I did not prod it since I am not sure how to replace it.
