question about Dyna s?

#1 PostAuthor: actionman » Tue Jun 17, 2008 4:30 pm

have fitted a dyna s,no probs with the actual fitting...BUT...am having probs with the timing?According to the instructions i should be using the
advanced timing mark(approx 1/2 inch to the right of the 'f' mark)on the advance assembly...when i do this the dyna mounting plate wont adjust far enough?...have tried to move the actual module as well...but it will only go as far as the 'f ' mark before the light comes-on?Am using a static
test light, but i do have a snap-on timing light, and was going to check it with this later. I just dont understand how it can be this far out...maybe the advance unit is wrong, but according to Dyna,it isnt? Thanks all. :??

Main thing is.........

For static timing (the most acurate way) you gotta hold the magnet trigger at FULL advance... against the spring pressure :??
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

Just a thought,
you do have the correct crank rotor. They were different on early models and iv'e seen them fitted to later models by previous owners, the following link will explain.

Right then..
The critical part of the timing is to ensure it fires at the correct time when running over 3000rpm.
This means the static timing must be set when the ignition is at FULL advance.
To achieve this, you have to manually hold the trigger bit (middle magnet) fully clockwise.
The advance unit (bit with springs & bob weights) is NOT in the fully advance mode when at rest.
When the engine spins faster the weights move away from the rest place and push out. This in turn advances the trigger, and therefore the spark firing.
So, you gotta get the line on the advance unit ( 1/2" clockwise line) aligned to the casing mark, then manually twist the trigger clockwise as far as it'll go & check it sparks at that point :!:
To be totally acurate you should use a 'degree' wheel to make sure the marks do actually meet at 40 deg advanced, but it won't be far out
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

AND THE LORD SAID"LET THERE BE LIGHT....AND THERE WAS LIGHT"...cheers mate,i'm sure that'll help me loads, but why on earth doesnt it say anything about that in the instructions i got,it would've saved me some frustration  ...Thanks again pigford! :D

Hope to see you at the Taunton South West Z1OC meeting in July

By the way, the Dyna S backplate will probably be turned as far as it'll go
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
