Completely stripped the engine for standard rebuild. Just about the only thing not dismantled were the gears and all seemed to go together as it should. However if the rear wheel is spun by hand in neutral there is a knocking sound from behind the clutch basket, both directions, about 2 or 3 per wheel revolution. Also knocks from same area when running. Guessing at the moment that it's one and the same. With clutch plates out and bike in gear no noise. Kickstart operation also quiet. I was wandering if the dog teeth gears are just contacting with neutral selected. Could something be slightly out of adjustment? Any ideas before, or when, the whole thing comes apart?
Thanks
Neil

Gearbox Knocking

Neil, the only noises I know of in this area are:
1. the radial springs on the clutch basket, usually the three large ones are broken. They are not evident at first glance, however, close inspection will see the break. This is usually a rattle when engine is reving, at slow revs it could sound like a knock. This requires a re-spliting of the crank cases.
2. the other is inside the alternatotr rotor assembly where a small (6mm) pin shears and gives a knock. This is not apparent on the outside and requires a dismantle to check.
The ideas of protruding screws and clutch bearing rumble are worth a look at. I would also remove the sump for inspection....Did you tighten the oil pump?
RegardZ.

Thanks all for the thoughts. When spinning the back wheel the knocking only seemed to happen in neutral. Have run up and down the gears a few times and noise now gone away. Maybe something in the box just wasn't seated right, though hard to see what. Anyway, fingers crossed no further problems.
Cheers
