No hanskloss i'm serious, I read it on the world wide site and they rekon it works great and the rubbers stay soft and don't go hard again.
Life's too short!

Sounds like something to try.

Just been quoted NZ$425 for the 4 podded K&Ns which probably represents about 20% of my bike's value, so risking the family microwave is a bargin.

Has anyone tried the imitation K&Ns? have seen them advertised on Zpower Aussie and wondered how they compare with the real things?

Blimey.... $400+ for 4 x K&N's... they solid gold or wot!?
You can get a set of replica pod filters (look identical for under ?50 in UK! You sure that price didn't include a new set of carbs too? :O
And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!

If they have gone hard "New ones" are the ONLY way to go. Once you have new ones, try folding them back on themselves for installation.

There maybe a solution that you can soak them in some commercial product and they will soften. They used to use this product on Go-Cart tyres to soften the hard rubber. Can't remember the name. Did try it with reasonable success softening the old Z1 series air-box (Now that's a real hard bastard of a job!) Does anyone know of this product?

For Davy Doh' ....Microwave ovens don't work. I read the same on World Wide forum and reported my failure. Not to mention leaving one of the rubbers in the microwave and forgot about it. My wife later cooked some vegies and didn't notice it until there was an explosion of acrid black fumes!

Pigford,
yes the K&Ns are expensive, in Sterling equivalent about PDS 120. I have gone for keeping it standard and sourcing new airbox rubbers from Z1 Enterprises in the USA who on an currency exchange converted basis offered the best deal.

Looked seriously at the imitation K&Ns which had the attraction of looking eaiser to fit, but was put off by the fact that I might have to re-jet the carbs. Already stressed gertie
enough by raising compression ratio from using a Wiseco kit at 10.25:1

In NZ they wanted NZ$29 (PDS10) each for the airbox rubbers and the cam cover gasket NZ$58 (PDS20) Got these from USA for NZ$53 for 4 rubbers and the gasket was NZ$10!

I hope one day that internet competion will have some beneficial effect on local dealer prices, but I have seen little evidence of it yet.

Hanskloss, I thought I had nothing to loose with these hard rubber tubes. I tried one for 10 seconds.. a little difference but not enough! I tried the same one for 15 secs... still not much, then 20 secs... There was a "swoosh" noise and I noticed a small hole had burst in the side of the tube.
At this point I must say, that I had had this one in vasoline for several days, trying to soften it. I tried the others at various times .... no luck.

After dismissing the idea of softening in a microwave, I walked away intending to buy some new ones. .... How was I to know my wife had a vegie dish she wanted to heat-up. Ka-Boom! Yes, I had inadvertently left one of the tubes in the back of the microwave.

It was the very next night when my wife said;"There is a strange oily smell coming from the dish washer. Have you been washing bike parts again?" .. "No!" was my answer. It was then that she looked in the bottom of the dishwasher and found two of those washers that fall out of a head when you have the valve springs out.... "How did they get there?" I asked leaving the kitchen.

What a pleasure the new rubbers were!

Only after a week of ordering my bits from Z1 Enterprises Nyork were here (Z1 head light shell, cam cover gasket and new carb airbox rubbers), I was tackling the daunting task of refitting the airbox rubbers

For you guys who recommended not persisting with the 25 year olds, my profound thanks.

30 minutes and it was all done. Whilst I won't call it a pleasure, beat the 2 hour spent getting nowhere with the old.

Then it was a few minutes with a hole saw on the headlight shell (to two cable port a one cable port Z1 shell) it was headlight on, no fuses blowing, all electrics seem to be working and poised to restart the best!

Might leave this for a day or so to recover emotionally, chill the Moet and get ready to go. Or Should I put the front brakes back on first????
