What is the bike doing? where is it running rich / lean at what rev range?
Have you checked and adjusted the valve clearances?
Have you checked and adjusted the fuel heights?
In your first questions on carbs you mentioned the needle moving up and down. What did you do to stop this happening?
On the slides there should be a size, It should be 1.5 is there a square notch by the pilot outlet into the venturi on the slide as well?
Have you had the bike long? Is the choke lever the normal kawasaki one - I am wondering if you have some Suzuki parts on them.

Z1R Advance Retard Unit Identification ?

Hello Rich
i had the day off work today and id a bit more fiddling, as it has been runing well but weak i tried out the 107.5 main jets instead of the 105;s and it pulling much better at low revs and the plugs are tan. also i put the magnetic trigger on the 1003 a/r unit hmmm i dunno but it is running really well
also no off idle stutter
Last year i had the valve guides and seals replaced and the head skimmed, also all the shims were changed, whilst it ran better it still had the stutter off idle whilst pulling away, this problem has been with bike ever since i have owned it 2.5 years.
The floats have all been set, the valve clearances are all good
The needles moving up and down a bit in the slides i have left as the other needles i have do the same, ( i did try putting small springs above each one but this made no difference to the performance)) yes there is a square notch by the pilot outlet
The choke lever is a normal one other than the plastic tab on it which i took off the 26mm carbs i had
I think the problem has been the timing being retarded, which would cause the rich running all over the rev range and probably the stutter
So i am running on DL needles, 258-01 needle jets, 107.5 mains 15 pilots, Z1R emulsion tubes, MK11 electronic igntion with 1003 a/r unit (I might try the 1006 a/r unit again now)
i dont regret buying the Keyster carb kit as that has helped a lot, plus i like the rubber carb base gasketts
It is only since i have been investigating the timing/ignition system that i have started to cure this problem.........i wish i knew more so i could understand it all a bit better
i hope what i have said makes some sort of sense, if i am wrong on anything i am glad to be corrected
Thanks for your thoughts and help

The 'off-idle' stutter is a common problem on older Zeds....
Its due to emmission levels so they tend to set them lean. I thought the pilots were 17.5 as standard
So you must be extra lean
The retarded ignition will effect the running, but it usually helps low speed if retarded a bit extra
How many degrees we talking then
As Rich says, get full throttle running (main jets) right then tackle the low end response.
Sure there ain't any air leaks, cracks in rubbers

And on the 7th day... Zeds were created!
The problem with this bike has been running too rich, and now i have replaced all the carb parts (keyster kit) and sorted out which A/R unit too use it no longer does this, and this has also cured the off idle stutter.
The pilots on a Z1R are 15s as standard
The retarded ignition was a wild guess as to why it was running rich and sooting up the plugs, I had rebuilt the carbs, the head had been overhauled, the electrics were fine. unfortunatley my only means of checking timing is with a strobe, so by trying out the A/R unit that came with the MK11 electronic ignition did i start to cure the problem.
All the rubbers have been replaced and checked whilst running with WD-40 no flash fires or whatever
As it is now it running the best it ever has, loads of bottom and midrange grunt and a nice power surge at about 6000 rpm, the plugs are a tan colour
I wish i had more money/time/knowledge for all this but i havent so it has been a long process
Your comment about a dyno is interesting but the only one i know off down here i dont think they would know what to do with a bike this age
I willl say a big thanks to all of you that have contributed to this problem you have all helped and it has been great to able to tallk to other Zed sufferes

If it's running well I'd leave it alone, The carbs you are altering are 30 years old now and the slides are probably worn a bit.
You could check the small pilot outlet holes in the venturi. There usually are two one either side of the notch in the slide and if these block they give a stutter when just coming off idle. The DLs will have richened 3 to 6 K and leaned 6 to 8K. If you have time to spare now that you have the correct size mains in you could try the CNs again but as Piggy says without a dyno it is very subjective in evaluation.
