76 Turbo

#1 PostAuthor: Kwakanut » Wed Apr 02, 2008 9:09 pm

Hey all, first post here and I thought I'd start with my 76 Z900 turbo project. I bought this in "finished" form from a couple of guys who ran out of $$ and time. The motor was built by Orient Express here in the states and uses an MTC big block 1428cc with 8:1 comp, crank welded, balanced, trued, new billet back cut gears in 1st, 2nd, and 4th, billet clutch basket, lock up clutch, and a magneto ignition by Joe Hunt, who basically does all the drag racers magneto ignitions, and all the associated goodies. It has an ATP turbo kit using an old Rajay turbo, and a Mikuni flatslide carb. The turbo needs rebuilding and that was the final nail in the coffin of the previous owners. They gave me all the receipts for work done.
I've sent the turbo off for a rebuild, but I may have to convert to a modern Garrett T3 system since the Rajays are long out of production and parts are scarce. Either way, the plan is to ride it this summer and then take it down for cosmetic refinishing over the winter. The POs were smart enough to send the mechanical work out to the very best, but did the rest themselves, and let's just say that "backyard mechanic" is a kind way to put it.

Here's some pics:

Thats one tasty motor you've got there :) Regarding the cosmetics  they certainly need improving but have to admit you've got the makings of a serious piece of machinary there. Good luck :D

Interesting thought. I was going to use it as trade in on the garrett system, but I'm open other options. Thanks for the input on the carb. I'm going to call down to Texas for an update. I'll let you know on the Rajay...

No doubt about it! :up There is some rudimentary frame bracing. When I take it down, I'll beef it up a bit.

My daily driver is a ZRX1100, and I'm going to be doing a USD fork conversion on that, so my plan is to swap the ZRX forks, reworked with springs and cartridges from both Race Tech and Traxxion Dynamics, along with a ZRX swingarm and a set of Works Performance shocks on to the Turbo. I've got some Brake Tech ductile iron rotors and a brembo conversion for the ZRX forks, so I should be able to stop and turn a bit better when I'm through!!

Alrighty, so I put her up on the old lift yesterday and gave it the once over. As expected, to make it a truly nice bike will take a bit of effort. I will be able to strap on the turbo and go for the summer any way. :D

I decided to upgrade/modernize by switching over to a Garrett T3/T4 set up. Parts for the Rajay are near impossible to find. Some news on that front though: it is rumored that a group in Houston, TX is working to manufacture replacement parts for the Rajays. We'll see about that. Going to the Garrett will require a few mods to the piping, but otherwise should bolt right up.

The new turbo set up should be here next week. Pics to follow.

I am also having a set of S1 replica triple clamps made to hold the ZRX forks:

and a nice titanium axle and billet aluminum eccentric for the rear wheel:

I have also ordered up a set of Carrozzeria V7R wheels in anodized black:

First order of business is to hook up the garrett and what all else and see if I can start her up. I'll keep you updated! Wish me luck.
